Cleaner fuelsCleaner fuels are not a fad for us. We have been consistently developing cleaner fuels since the 1980s. We launched sulfur-free gasoline and sulfur-free diesel in the market in 2004 and our latest top product, the NExBTL diesel manufactured from renewable raw materials in 2008. We strongly believe in the future. We will invest several billion euro in projects connected with future cleaner fuels by the middle of the 2010s. We will also continue developing our current refineries. In addition, we plan to be successful in special products, such as top grade base oils. Our first diesel production plant based on renewable fuels was completed in Porvoo, Finland in the summer of 2007. The second plant in Porvoo should be finished in 2009, the Singapore plant in 2010 and the plant in the Netherlands in 2011. |

Renewable fuelsDiesel manufactured from renewable raw materials clearly reduces both greenhouse gas emissions and other detrimental emissions. The greenhouse gas emissions for the entire life span of the NExBTL biodiesel are forty to sixty per cent lower than those generated by fossil diesel. At present, vegetable oils and animal fats can be used as the raw materials of renewable diesel. We are currently involved in a great deal of development work in order to be able to start utilizing only raw materials obtained from outside the food chain in the next ten to twenty years. We require that the development of our renewable fuel suppliers is socially and ecologically sustainable and that their entire delivery chain is traceable. We also comply with strict safety regulations in all stages of the logistics chain. |
EnvironmentWe develop products which stress the environment less than before; this way, we can promote the reduction of environmental impacts due to traffic. We strive to harm the environment as little as possible and we make spontaneous environmental investments, preparing for the future. We purchase our raw materials in a responsible manner and in line with the principles of sustainable development, and comply with strict safety regulations in all stages of the logistics chain. For decades, we have invested in the safety of marine transport in particular. We promote production methods that comply with the ideology of sustainable development in co-operation with other players in organizations such as the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and Round Table on Responsible Soy. Research and technologyOur research activities focus on product development of traffic fuels which stress the environment less and the production technologies required when manufacturing such fuels. In addition to fuels, we are known for lubricants and base oils, bitumen products, fuel oil for heating, jet fuels, solvents and fuel oil used by the industry and ships. |
